New York Paralegal Salaries

New York is the global leader in the legal industry, and to say that the prospects for paralegals throughout the state are excellent would be an understatement.

Paralegals in New York earn the third-highest average salary of all states in the nation – $59,300 per year. New York offers the highest salary in the nation for those at the top of their game, with the top ten percent earning an average of $94,710.

According to the US Department of Labor, as of 2016:

  • New York State is home to the third-highest number of paralegals in the nation – 22,210
  • The greater New York City metropolitan area is home to the highest number of paralegals of all metro areas in the nation – 16,830
  • Over the past five years the average paralegal salary in the state has gone up by $4,460

The New York State Department of Labor reports that the number of paralegal jobs throughout the state is projected to grow by 10.8 over the decade leading up to 2024. That’s higher than the national average, and translates into an average of 770 job openings each year.

In 2014 the New York Daily News reported that the paralegal profession was one of the hottest jobs in the New York area. And things have only gotten hotter since.

Though most paralegals are still found in law firms, corporate legal teams are more often delegating tasks to paralegals as a cost saving measure. From Pfizer to NASDAQ, New York City, is the global headquarters for some of the largest corporations on the planet. Many of those companies have massive legal departments filled with hundreds of paralegals and lawyers. In fact, the most lucrative jobs for paralegals are found in some pretty unlikely industry sectors, including aerospace, computer manufacturing, pharmaceutical, software, and electronic component manufacturing.
