ABA Approved Paralegal Programs & Schools

With time and money in limited supply, you want to earn a quality education that’s going to put you in a good position to land a paralegal job and get your career off the ground or take it to the next level.

You’ve seen colleges and universities that boast ABA approval for their paralegal programs, but there’s also plenty that don’t hold this distinction. Is it worth your time to hunt down an ABA-approved program, or can you get where you need to be without one?

This is up for debate. But here’s what we know.

The American Bar Association (ABA) is synonymous with law schools in the U.S. Since 1952, the ABA (or rather, the Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar) has been accrediting programs leading to the Juris Doctor (JD) degree for lawyers. Every jurisdiction in the U.S. recognizes ABA-approved law Schools as meeting the prerequisites for taking the bar, and in many jurisdictions, it’s the only way to qualify.

So, when the ABA’s Standing Committee on Paralegals and Approval commission began approving paralegal education programs in 1975, it seemed as if ABA-approval for paralegal programs would become the accepted standard.

ABA approval of paralegal programs didn’t take off quite like it did for law school programs and today, only about 22 percent of the more than 1,200 paralegal programs in the US hold ABA approval. This isn’t necessarily because the other 78 percent don’t meet ABA-approval guidelines; it simply means they haven’t sought out the voluntary approval process.

For many institutions, the decision not to seek ABA approval of their paralegal programs is largely due to the arduous and time-consuming application and evaluation process. Many schools also choose not to seek approval because of the costs associated with doing so—costs that many institutions feel are excessive: Between the initial expense of seeking approval and the annual fees for maintaining it, ABA approval can have a price tag as high as $15,000, a cost that is defrayed through higher tuition rates. Instead, the vast majority of schools choose to rely on their reputation and the institutional accreditation they hold.

For example, Boston University notes that, “We have found that most employers seeking to hire paralegals place more value on the reputation of Boston University and the Paralegal Studies Program than ABA approval, which is obtained for a fee.”

Likewise, UC Berkeley Extension determined that “opting for ABA approval will not enhance the quality of the certificate.”

Further, while the ABA does approve post-degree certificates and degree programs at every level, they don’t recognize online paralegal programs. This is seen as a questionable disqualifier since even the most respected institutions now offer partially or fully online programs as a matter of course as a way to make quality education more accessible to non-traditional students. For some students, attending classes on-campus is simply not practical, or even possible.

But ABA approval does come with its share of benefits. These programs have met strict criteria, so you can be assured you are completing a quality program that will be instantly recognized as meeting the requirements for national certification, not to mention that some employers still seek job candidates who have completed an ABA-approved program.

What You Need to Know About ABA-Approval for Paralegal Programs

There’s no denying that an ABA-approved program is going to give you the quality paralegal education you’re looking for, thanks to its rigorous evaluation and approval process.

According to the ABA, the intensive review and on-site evaluation process has “led to the development of superior paralegal education programs.”

The Types of Programs Eligible for ABA-Approval

Institutions with ABA-approved programs include community colleges and four-year colleges and universities, both private and public. Programs are structured as …

  • Post-degree certificates (post associate’s and post-bachelor’s)
  • Certificates offered as a minor and taken concurrent with an associate’s or bachelor’s
  • Associate’s degrees
  • Bachelor’s degrees
  • Professional and graduate certificate programs for practicing paralegals interested in more advanced education

An ABA approved paralegal education consists of at least 60 semester hours, made up of at least 18 semester credits of general education courses and at least 18 semester credits of legal specialty courses. This is why all ABA-approved certificate programs are designed as either post-degree (post-associate’s or post-bachelor’s) programs that build on an existing liberal arts education or as minor certificates that can be taken concurrent with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. There are also a select number of programs offered through university and college extension/professional studies departments that are designed for practicing paralegals who already have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in or related to legal studies.

What you’ll notice missing from the list are undergraduate or entry-level certificate programs. This is because the ABA feels strongly that some general liberal arts courses are foundational to becoming a well-rounded and capable paralegal prepared to thrive in the professional environment of a law office or corporate legal department.

Many ABA-approved programs offer flexible curriculum options, including part-time and evening study.

You can search for ABA-approved paralegal programs by city, state, or zip code through the ABA’s Approved Paralegal Education Programs Directory.

Requirements for ABA Approval

Schools seeking ABA approval for their paralegal programs must complete an exhaustive series of self-evaluation reports to ensure they operate in compliance with ABA Guidelines. Once they successfully complete the evaluation process, they are approved for a period of seven years. After this period, the school must go through the approval process again.

Even before a school can apply to gain ABA-approval for their paralegal program, the program must have been in place for at least two years so there is a record of students having successfully graduated.

Schools must also provide the ABA Approval Committee with a detailed list of their curriculum, including their legal specialty coursework. They must also provide a detailed list of the program’s faculty and advisory committee.

This means an approved program must not only meet specific curriculum guidelines, but its faculty must meet the high standards of the ABA, as well. Once the ABA Approval Committee determines that the program has met the minimum criteria for approval, they schedule an on-site evaluation of the paralegal department, as well as the entire institution.

Features and Benefits of ABA-Approved Programs

If you choose a program that has been ABA-approved, you will be guaranteed several perks. For example, each program must operate under an advisory committee that includes practicing lawyers and paralegals from the public and private sector. Their oversight will ensure that the education you are receiving is practical and applicable to today’s legal environment.

ABA-approved programs must also be structured to allow students to go on to achieve higher levels of education. The ABA even encourages schools to enter into articulation agreements with other schools to help students more seamlessly continue their education. This means that if you want to seek additional schooling down the line, you can be assured that most of your credits will transfer to a higher degree/certificate program.

When it comes to legal specialty courses, ABA-approved programs must also meet specific requirements. Courses like legal research, litigation, and legal writing are all considered legal specialty courses if they emphasize practical paralegal skills. Other courses encouraged include business classes, computer technology courses, and field experiences in the form of internships. Internships offered through ABA-approved programs must meet clearly defined requirements and must ensure ongoing communication between the student and the field experience supervisor.

As part of an ABA-approved program, you will also be guaranteed comprehensive student services, including counseling and advisement. Some of the services that must be offered as part of an ABA-approved program include:

  • Helping graduates find suitable employment
  • Providing orientation to new students that includes a realistic view of the profession and job opportunities
  • Counseling students to assess strengths and weaknesses during academic planning

If you ask a paralegal whether completing an ABA-approved program is preferable—or even required—chances are you’ll get different answers depending on where they work. This is because some employers in larger metropolitan areas require paralegals to possess a degree from an ABA-approved program, while in other parts of the country there is little mention of ABA approval.

You will also find that some state paralegal associations go as far as to recommend that employers give preference to paralegal candidates who hold a degree or certificate from an ABA-approved program. Aspiring paralegals can benefit from making a call to their state’s paralegal association to learn more about the weight of ABA-approval in their area.

What You Can’t Get With an ABA-Approved Program

The ABA does not approve undergraduate certificate programs and online paralegal programs, though these programs certainly have their place.

For example, in certain parts of the country, an undergraduate paralegal certificate may be the standard credential for entry-level employment, so it might not make much sense to pursue a longer (and possibly more expensive) course of education.

You may be a working professional interested in changing careers and attending a campus-based program just isn’t feasible. Many respected institutions offer quality paralegal programs via interactive, online platforms, allowing working students like you to study on your own time. A number of online programs in paralegal studies are also self-paced, allowing you to complete the course requirements as your schedule permits.

You may also reside in a part of the country where there are no paralegal programs—ABA-approved or otherwise. An online paralegal program may be the only viable option for you, allowing you to pursue the profession regardless of your geographic location.

Program-Approval vs Institutional Accreditation

Institutional accreditation through one of these regional accrediting agencies is the long-held standard for determining the quality of a school:

  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
  • New England Association of Colleges and Schools
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges
  • Council for Occupational Education
  • New York State Board of Regents

If a school has been accredited, you can be confident that it has met high standards in terms of faculty, curriculum, and the programs it offers.

ABA-approval, on the other hand, applies only to the paralegal program, rather than being a school-wide accreditation. Since ABA-approved programs will inevitably be housed in quality schools that hold regional accreditation, you can think of ABA-approval as a second layer of assurance.

There are a few characteristics that are constant among quality paralegal programs, whether or not they hold ABA approval:

  • Faculty quality is an important component. Look for instructors who are licensed attorneys and practicing paralegals, capable of bringing real world experience to the classroom.
  • Examine a program’s graduation rate and employment placement. How many students has the program graduated? What percentage of those students found employment in the field? Statistics don’t lie, so if you’re looking for a clear indication of quality, graduate statistics help tell the story.
  • Student support services should also be considered when choosing a paralegal program. Does the institution offer student counseling and professional assistance like resume preparation, internship placement, and employment assistance? Are there dedicated financial advisors who can help you understand your options for loans, grants, scholarships, and program financing?

Don’t forget that no matter how great a program looks on paper, the value of the program will ultimately depend on your needs. Does it offer a flexible curriculum, with opportunities for practical, on-the-job experiences? Does it offer the online, accelerated, or hybrid format you need? If it’s an online program, does the institution offer plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow students and professors?
